What do I actually need to start shortwave listening?
A receiver that covers the shortwave range and some length of wire outside, even a modest one. Most of what shows up in this log started with equipment far simpler than it might seem from the outside.
Do I need a license to listen?
No. Receiving shortwave broadcasts is passive listening and does not require a license in most places, unlike transmitting. Rules vary by country, so it's worth a quick local check if you're unsure.
What's the difference between AM and SSB on a shortwave set?
Most broadcast stations use AM, which is straightforward to tune. SSB (single sideband) is used more by utility and amateur stations and needs a receiver with a fine-tuning control to sound natural rather than distorted.
Why does a station sound clear one night and vanish the next?
Shortwave propagation depends on the state of the ionosphere, which shifts with time of day, season, and solar activity. A station that was strong on Tuesday may simply not have a usable path on Wednesday.
Is a long wire antenna always better than a short one?
Not always — length interacts with height, orientation, and the band you're chasing. A longer wire tends to help on lower frequencies, but a shorter one strung higher can outperform it on the upper bands.
How do I write a reception report a station will actually reply to?
Include the date, exact time (usually in UTC), frequency, and specific details from the broadcast — a mentioned song, a presenter's name, a station ID — that prove the report matches that transmission and not a guess.
How long does a QSL card usually take to arrive?
It varies widely — some stations reply within weeks by email, others take months by post, and a few never reply at all. Patience tends to matter more than persistence here.
What's the best time of day to listen?
There isn't one single best time — different bands favor different hours. Lower bands tend to open after dark, higher bands during the day, and the grayline hours around dawn and dusk often bring the most unusual catches.
Can I hear shortwave stations without an outdoor antenna?
Yes, many receivers include a telescopic antenna that works for stronger regional signals, but an outdoor wire will generally pull in far more, especially on the weaker end of the dial.
Why does one band work in winter and another in summer?
Ionospheric layers respond to how much sunlight a region gets, which shifts by season. Lower bands often open better on long winter nights, while higher bands can benefit from stronger summer daytime ionization.
What should go in every logbook entry?
At minimum: date, time, frequency, and a short note on signal quality and content. Anything beyond that — antenna used, weather, receiver settings — is useful but optional.
Does the sunspot cycle actually matter for casual listening?
It does, particularly for the higher bands, which tend to open more reliably during years of higher solar activity. Lower bands are less affected and remain usable through most of the cycle.
Is Bandlog required to use this site?
No. Bandplan is a free-standing blog; Bandlog is a separate, optional logging app mentioned on its own page. Reading the log requires nothing beyond a browser.
